I have searched the web for websites that allow teachers and others to create webpages for their classes. You could do likewise, but if you do not know what to look for, you may soon become overwhelmed with the number of options out there. The purpose of this article is to guide you to ten sites that allow you to make various kinds of websites for your class, anything from a class blog, to a class wiki, to a website where students can submit digital assignments.
I could have organized the sites I have listed below in several different ways: randomly, alphabetically, easiest to most difficult, most visually appealing to least visually appealing, most powerful to least powerful, etc. I often find that those kinds of lists do not tell me how good a particular service is for myself, so I don’t think it would benefit you very much either. That’s why I will give you what I feel is the best for each category (blog, wiki, regular webpage) and then provide you links to the other honorable mentions in those categories.
Best Free Conglomerate Host (Mixes aspects from all three):
* http://www.edu20.org/ Can do blogs, wikis, and webpages. Students register for your class and can then also submit homework via the website. Entire schools can set up so every teacher, class, student, and parent use this resource.
Honorable Mentions:
http://classjump.com/index.php
http://www.classnotesonline.com/
Best Free Basic Webpage Host:
* http://education.weebly.com/ Very user friendly. Easy to create a basic website and yet powerful enough for more advanced users. Also capable of creating student accounts so they can create content as well. You can easily setup a blog with this account as well.
Honorable Mentions:
http://www.yola.com/nonprofit.html
http://www.wix.com/ If you want a more visually stunning website use this one. Great flash animations and highly customizable.
Best Free Wiki Host:
* http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers Can easily create student accounts. You get the full power of a subscription based wiki service, but with it being completely free for educational purposes.
Honorable Mentions:
http://www.wikidot.com/learnmore:education
http://pbworks.com/content/edu+overview
Best Free Blog Host:
* http://wordpress.com/ Easily the most powerful and popular blog host, but could be blocked by your school.
Honorable Mentions:
http://edublogs.org/ If all of the blogging sites are blocked, you talk to your tech coordinator, this is probably the easiest site to get unblocked since it is geared specifically for schools and teachers.
Please note that some of these sites are blocked by some filtering systems. I know that for my school all of the blog hosts are blocked that I have mentioned. All of the other sites are not blocked at my school. Your school might be different. If you absolutely need to access one of the blogging sites at school,
